South Island Self-Drive.
A Christchurch-return loop through the Mackenzie Country, the southern lakes, Fiordland and the Otago coast — drive days kept to around three hours so the trip is not spent behind the wheel.
What is the South Island Self-Drive itinerary?
Ten nights in a Christchurch-return loop: Lake Tekapo, Aoraki / Mount Cook, Wānaka, Queenstown, Te Anau with a Milford Sound day, Dunedin and Ōamaru, with most driving days kept to around three hours. Quoted at net rates.
Last updated: 5 October 2026
Why it runs in this order.
A loop that starts and ends in Christchurch so the rental car has no one-way drop. Inland first for the mountains and lakes, then down to Fiordland, and back up the east coast where the roads are easier for tired drivers.
Who it suits: Independent couples and families who are confident drivers. Clients should know New Zealand drives on the left and that a licence not in English needs an approved translation or an International Driving Permit.
Destination guides on this route: Christchurch, Lake Tekapo, Aoraki / Mount Cook, Wānaka, Queenstown, Te Anau & Fiordland, Milford Sound, Dunedin, Ōamaru & Waitaki.
Services this programme draws on: Self-drive & campervan programmes, FIT & tailor-made, Hotels, lodges & accommodation.
The programme.
-
Day 1Christchurch
Arrive Christchurch and collect the car next morning rather than after a long-haul flight. An evening in the rebuilt city centre.

Over the Lindis Pass to Wānaka, about two and a half hours. A lakeside afternoon, or the Roys Peak track for fit walkers.

East to Dunedin, about three and a half hours. The railway station, the Otago Peninsula and its wildlife in the late afternoon.
