The shape

Why it runs in this order.

Three nights in Rotorua rather than one, so the cultural experiences are not squeezed into an evening between drives. The trip ends in Hawke’s Bay, which has its own airport with domestic connections.

Who it suits: Clients with a cultural interest, repeat visitors who skipped the North Island first time, and small groups who want more than one evening of Māori culture.

Destination guides on this route: Auckland, Rotorua, Taupō, Tongariro National Park, Napier, Hastings & Havelock North.

Services this programme draws on: Māori cultural experiences, Guides & driver-guides, Group tours & GIT.

Te Puia at Whakarewarewa with the Pōhutu geyser and the carving and weaving schools, a second geothermal valley, and an evening cultural experience with a hāngī. Guests are visitors under tikanga, and the programme is delivered by Māori-owned and iwi-led operators.

An hour south to Taupō. Huka Falls, the lake, and views to the Tongariro volcanoes on a clear day.

  4. Days 6–7Napier and Hawke’s Bay
