Answer

What is the North Island Nature and Culture itinerary?

Seven days from Auckland to Wellington: a day on Tiritiri Matangi’s predator-free bird sanctuary, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, a Rotorua night with kiwi and a Māori cultural evening, a guided Tongariro Alpine Crossing and a Zealandia night tour. Quoted at net rates, white-label.

Last updated: 23 October 2026

The shape

Why it runs in this order.

South in one direction, so nothing is driven twice. Tiritiri Matangi comes first because its ferry runs Wednesday to Sunday, and there are two nights at Tongariro so the Crossing gets a full day, with a lower-level walk as the fallback if the weather closes the tops. It ends in Wellington, which has domestic and Australian connections.

Who it suits: Active couples and small groups who want birds, volcanoes and Māori culture in one week, with the fitness for a long alpine day walk.

Destination guides on this route: Auckland, Hauraki Gulf & Waiheke, Waitomo Caves, Rotorua, Tongariro National Park, Wellington.

Services this programme draws on: Wildlife & nature experiences, Māori cultural experiences, Great Walks & guided walking.

Day by day

The programme.

  1. Day 1Auckland

Arrive Auckland. The Auckland War Memorial Museum’s Māori and Pacific collections are the right introduction to the week.

  2. Day 2Tiritiri Matangi

A ferry day to Tiritiri Matangi, a predator-free island in the Hauraki Gulf, home to takahē, kōkako, tīeke (saddleback) and hihi (stitchbird). No food is sold on the island and there are no bins, so guests carry a packed lunch and take their rubbish home.

  3. Day 3Waitomo and Rotorua

About two and a half hours to Waitomo for the 45-minute Glowworm Cave tour, which ends with a boat ride through the glowworm grotto, or three hours of black-water rafting for the fit. Then two hours to Rotorua for an evening Māori cultural experience with a hāngī, delivered by a Māori-owned operator.

  4. Day 4Rotorua to Tongariro

A morning with kiwi, at Te Puia’s Kiwi Conservation Centre beside the Pōhutu geyser or at the National Kiwi Hatchery Aotearoa on the Agrodome site, then two to two and a half hours south to Tongariro National Park, a dual World Heritage area.

  5. Day 5Tongariro Alpine Crossing

The guided Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a one-way walk through an active volcanic landscape with transport at both ends. DOC advises allowing nine hours, rates the fitness required as high and does not recommend it for children under 10.

  6. Day 6Wellington

South to Wellington, around four and a half to five hours. An evening night tour at Zealandia, the fenced ecosanctuary close to the city centre, of around two and a half hours in a small guided group.

  7. Day 7Wellington

Te Papa and the waterfront, then out from Wellington Airport.

Drive and ferry times are approximate and depend on stops, weather and road conditions.
