New Zealand seasons, month by month — for the trade.
Twelve months of the southern-hemisphere year and what each does to your file: the weather in both islands, the school holidays, the ski season, what sells and how far ahead to hold it.
When is the best time to sell New Zealand?
All year, for different products. Summer (December–February) suits beaches, lakes and Great Walks; autumn brings colour and value; winter (June–August) is ski season; spring is shoulder value. Christmas to January is the tightest window for inventory.
Last updated: 5 October 2026
Each month has its weather, its demand and its lead time.

January
Peak summer, and the tightest inventory of the year.

February
Settled late summer, once the schools go back.

March
Early autumn: harvest, warm days and better value.

April
Autumn colour in Central Otago, and a busy holiday month.

May
Late autumn: the quietest, best-value window of the year.

June
Winter arrives and the ski fields open.

July
Mid-winter and the peak of the ski season.

August
Late winter: reliable snow and quieter slopes after the holidays.

September
Spring begins: lambs, blossom and spring skiing.

October
Mid-spring: the ski season closes and the walking season opens.

November
Late spring: lupins, long days and the last shoulder before summer.

December
Summer starts, and Christmas changes everything.
Lead time is the whole game.
The tightest window in the New Zealand year is Christmas through January, when the domestic market is on its summer school holidays and beach towns, lakes, campervans and coaches are committed months ahead; Chinese New Year adds inbound pressure in late January or February. The July ski school holidays do the same to Queenstown and Wānaka. The shoulder months — March, May, September and November — usually give the best balance of weather, availability and rate.
Winter files need weather windows: the Milford Road and the alpine passes can close at short notice, and daylight is short in the south. Tell Explera DMC New Zealand the window and we will tell you honestly whether it works, and what to hold first.

The New Zealand year — what agents ask.
When are the seasons in New Zealand?
New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere: summer is December to February, autumn March to May, winter June to August and spring September to November. The ski season runs roughly mid-June to early October, depending on the field.
When is New Zealand hardest to book?
From Christmas through January, when New Zealand families are on their summer school holidays, and around Chinese New Year, which falls in late January or February. The July ski school holidays tighten Queenstown and Wānaka.
Which months are best value?
The shoulder months — March, May, September and November — usually give good weather or good availability at better rates. May is the quietest month between the summer and ski peaks.
When are the New Zealand school holidays?
There are four breaks: the long summer holiday from before Christmas into late January, and shorter holidays in April, July, and late September into October. Exact dates change each year, so confirm when quoting.
