The shape

Why it runs in this order.

North to south, so the trip builds towards the Southern Alps and ends in Queenstown, which has domestic connections and direct flights to Australia. The ferry and the long West Coast days sit mid-trip, when clients are past their jet lag.

Who it suits: First-time long-haul clients who want both islands in one trip. Works for couples and FIT families self-driving, or for small groups with a driver-guide.

Destination guides on this route: Auckland, Hobbiton (Matamata), Rotorua, Taupō, Wellington, Marlborough Sounds & Picton, Abel Tasman & Nelson, Punakaiki, Franz Josef Glacier, Wānaka, Queenstown, Milford Sound.

Services this programme draws on: FIT & tailor-made, Scenic rail & Cook Strait ferries, Māori cultural experiences.

Day by day

The programme.

  1. Days 1–2Auckland

Arrive Auckland. A harbour day — ferry to Devonport or out into the Hauraki Gulf — and an evening on the waterfront. The first night is kept light on purpose after a long-haul arrival.

  2. Days 3–4Hobbiton and Rotorua

South to Matamata, about two hours, for a timed Hobbiton Movie Set tour, then on to Rotorua in about an hour. Geothermal valleys, Te Puia at Whakarewarewa, and an evening Māori cultural experience with a hāngī, delivered by a Māori-owned operator.

  3. Days 5–6Taupō to Wellington

Huka Falls and Lake Taupō on the way south, then the Desert Road past the Tongariro volcanoes to Wellington — a long day of around six hours with stops. A full day in the capital: Te Papa, the cable car and the waterfront.

  4. Days 7–8Cook Strait to Abel Tasman

The Interislander or Bluebridge ferry to Picton, around three and a half hours through the Marlborough Sounds, then about two and a half hours to the Abel Tasman coast. A water-taxi and coastal-walk day in the national park.

  5. Day 9Punakaiki

Through the Buller Gorge to the West Coast, around four hours. The Pancake Rocks and blowholes at Punakaiki, best seen near high tide.

  6. Days 10–11Franz Josef Glacier

South along the coast, around three hours, with Hokitika on the way. A glacier valley walk, or a helicopter flight with a snow landing if the weather allows — sold as weather-dependent, never as a fixture.

  7. Days 12–14Queenstown

Over the Haast Pass to Wānaka and Queenstown, around six hours with stops. One Milford Sound day by road and cruise, or fly–cruise–fly when the weather suits, and a free day in Queenstown.

  8. Day 15Queenstown

Out from Queenstown via Auckland or Christchurch, or direct to Australia.

Drive and ferry times are approximate and depend on stops, weather and road conditions.
