Short answer: The Hooker Valley Track is the easiest way for a group to stand below Aoraki / Mount Cook: about 5 km each way to Hooker Lake on gravel and boardwalk, with three swing bridges. DOC is enforcing a 20-person limit on the first bridge, so Explera DMC New Zealand paces groups in small waves.
Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park is part of Te Wāhipounamu, the South West New Zealand World Heritage Area. For most groups the day centres on one walk, and that walk is getting busier.
The walk in brief
The track starts at the White Horse Hill car park, at the end of Hooker Valley Road off State Highway 80, near Aoraki / Mount Cook village. DOC allows about 90 minutes each way to Hooker Lake, returning the same way. On a clear day the walk ends with Aoraki / Mount Cook above the lake.
The track is gravel with some steps. It suits most mobile clients, but it is a full half-day, and the weather can change quickly at any time of year.

What changed on the Hooker Valley bridges in 2026?
- A new long bridge. The second bridge, at 189 metres, opened in July 2026. DOC describes it as the longest suspension bridge in New Zealand, and it has drawn more walkers up the valley.
- A pause gate on the first bridge. DOC announced on 22 September 2026 that it will install self-closing gates at each end of the first bridge. Engineers found cable wear on the 47-year-old bridge and recommended enforcing its 20-person limit, after rangers regularly saw more than 40 people on it at once.
- Rangers at peak times. DOC plans to roster rangers at the bridge in peak summer periods, and has started work on options to replace the bridge within the next few years.
For a coach group this means waiting at the bridge. We split groups into smaller walking parties with staggered starts, and we allow extra time in the day so the walk never feels rushed.
Fitting it into a programme
- Stay a night. An overnight in the village gives a second chance at the walk if the first morning is wet, and it adds stargazing; see our Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve guide.
- Build a weather plan. Snow can close State Highway 80, and the lakes are dangerously cold. Our weather contingency guide explains how we plan a spare option.
- Watch for access charges. DOC lists Aoraki / Mount Cook among four sites being investigated for charges for international visitors. Nothing is confirmed, so we check at quotation.
