Short answer: Auckland, Queenstown and Rotorua cover most New Zealand MICE briefs between them. Auckland is the international gateway with the widest hotel stock, Queenstown is a compact alpine resort built around activities, and Rotorua adds geothermal landscapes and Māori cultural experiences. Many incentive programmes combine two or all three.
Conference and incentive planners selling New Zealand usually ask the same three questions: where can the group fly in, where can they stay together, and what will they do that they could not do at home. These three destinations answer them in different ways, and they connect easily by domestic flight or coach.
Auckland: the gateway and the business base
Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and the main arrival point for long-haul flights, which makes it the natural start or finish for most programmes.
- Access. Most international flights arrive here, with domestic connections across the country.
- Hotel stock. The widest choice of hotels in New Zealand, from international brands to boutique properties, which helps when a group needs rooms together.
- Meetings. Hotel meeting rooms and city venues for plenaries, breakouts and gala dinners.
- Off-site options. Harbour cruises, the islands of the Hauraki Gulf including Waiheke for wine, and the west coast beaches.
Auckland suits groups that need a business agenda first, or a first night to recover from a long flight before moving on.

Queenstown: the incentive resort
Queenstown sits on Lake Wakatipu, surrounded by mountains, and is compact enough that a group can walk between hotels, restaurants and the lakefront.
- Access. Queenstown Airport has domestic services and flights across the Tasman, so groups from Australia can often fly in directly. Confirm current routes at quotation.
- Activities. Jet boating, gondola rides, scenic flights, wine tours in Central Otago, golf, and in winter, skiing. It is the adventure capital most incentive winners have heard of.
- Day trips. Milford Sound by coach or scenic flight, Glenorchy, Arrowtown and Wānaka.
- Seasons. Summer for lakes and long evenings, autumn for colour, and winter for snow.
Weather affects flights and some activities in alpine areas, so we build back-up plans into every Queenstown programme.

Rotorua: culture and geothermal landscapes
Rotorua is about three hours by road from Auckland, or a short domestic flight, and gives a programme something distinctly New Zealand.
- Māori cultural experiences delivered by Māori-owned and iwi-led operators. For a corporate group, a welcome or a shared hāngī meal can be a programme highlight when it is arranged with the hosts and the group is briefed on tikanga (protocol). See selling Māori cultural experiences respectfully.
- Geothermal valleys with geysers, mud pools and hot springs.
- Forest and lakes, with mountain biking, walking and lake activities for team-building.
- Hobbiton Movie Set near Matamata, which fits between Auckland and Rotorua.
Combining the three
A typical incentive shape we cost is:
- Arrive in Auckland, with a welcome dinner and a harbour or island day.
- Coach or fly to Rotorua for culture and geothermal sightseeing.
- Fly to Queenstown for the activity days and the gala dinner, then depart from Queenstown or via Auckland.
For shorter programmes, Auckland and Queenstown alone work well, linked by a direct domestic flight. Every route is costed to the group size and season.

Planning points for MICE groups
- Book peak dates early. December to February is the domestic peak, and hotel space for large groups is limited in Queenstown in particular.
- Hold domestic air early. Group seats on domestic routes need to be requested well ahead.
- Coach capacity. Larger coaches are limited in some regions. We confirm coach size and driver hours with the routing.
- Entry requirements. Delegates may need an NZeTA or a visa depending on passport and purpose of travel. Confirm current requirements on the Immigration New Zealand site.
- Weather contingencies. Alpine flights, boat trips and outdoor activities need a plan B on every day they appear.
