Short answer: Rotorua is one of New Zealand's best-known mountain biking towns. Destination Rotorua lists about 200 km of purpose-built trails, including easy Grade 1 and Grade 2 loops for new riders. Crankworx Rotorua runs on 10–14 March 2027, which RNZ reported will be the last event of the city's 10-year contract. Explera DMC New Zealand plans bikes, guides and rooms for groups.

Rotorua is in the Bay of Plenty, in the central North Island. This briefing is for travel agents and tour operators who sell active travel, cycling groups and event travel, and for anyone building a Rotorua stay around March 2027.

What does Rotorua offer mountain bikers?

  • A large trail network. Destination Rotorua lists "approximately 200km of expertly built trails" in the Rotorua network.
  • Trails for beginners. The same page lists a 597 m Kid's Loop (Grade 1), Apumoana at 2.4 km (Grade 2) and Tahi & Creek at 7.1 km (Grade 2).
  • A full-day loop. The Whakarewarewa Forest Loop is 33 km, mostly Grade 2 with a few Grade 3 sections, and Destination Rotorua suggests a full day for beginners riding slowly.
  • Bikes and shuttles. Local bike shops hire bikes and helmets, including electric mountain bikes, and shuttles run to the top of the Tawa trails from the Te Pūtake o Tawa car park.

What is happening with Crankworx Rotorua?

  • Dates. Crankworx lists Crankworx Rotorua for 10–14 March 2027.
  • The last event of the contract. RNZ reported on 22 September 2026 that March 2027 "will be the final event in the city's 10 year contract" with Crankworx.
  • What comes next is not settled. RNZ said Rotorua's mountain bike groups must decide how to keep the city's trails and events going, and the mayor called for more government support for regional tourism. No decision on events after 2027 has been announced, so we do not sell anything beyond March 2027 as confirmed.
  • Rooms that week. An international festival brings riders and visitors to a mid-sized city, so we hold rooms with a release date as early as possible for groups travelling that week.

How do groups plan a Rotorua riding day?

  • Match the trail to the rider. Mixed groups start on the Grade 1 and Grade 2 loops, and confident riders add Grade 3 sections with a guide.
  • Guides and hire in one plan. We book bikes, helmets and guides together, and e-bikes where the group needs them, so the day runs on one schedule.
  • Shuttles, not car parks. Shuttle uplift saves climbing for groups that want more descending, and keeps the coach free for the rest of the programme.
  • Pair it with the rest of Rotorua. Geothermal parks, Māori cultural evenings and hot pools all fit around a riding day.
