Short answer: The Mangapurua Track, part of the Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono Great Ride, reopened to cyclists on 24 October 2026 with seven new bridges. It is a remote Grade 3 ride through Whanganui National Park to the Bridge to Nowhere. Explera DMC New Zealand plans it for confident riders, with river transport and support.
This briefing is for travel agents and tour operators planning active groups in the central North Island.
What changed in October 2026?
- New bridges. DOC installed seven new bridges on the track. They were built offsite and flown in fully assembled, and replace narrow bridges that were hard to cross with a bike.
- Reopening. The track reopened on Saturday 24 October 2026, after its winter closure.
- More work to come. DOC and the Ngā Ara Tūhono Charitable Trust plan 15 new bridges and boardwalks across the Mangapurua and Kaiwhakauka tracks. The Kaiwhakauka works are scheduled for November and December 2026, with bypasses during construction.

Who is the Mangapurua Track for?
DOC describes the Mangapurua as a remote Grade 3 (intermediate) mountain bike track. It has exposed sections, steep drop-offs and slippery papa clay surfaces in wet weather. Riders need sound mountain biking skills and suitable gear.
- Riders. We match it to groups with off-road experience. Beginners are better suited to easier rides, such as the Otago Central Rail Trail.
- Non-riders. Clients who do not ride can reach the Bridge to Nowhere by jet boat and a short walk. See our Whanganui Journey briefing.
What should agents plan for?
- River transport. The track ends at Mangapurua Landing on the Whanganui River. DOC says river transport is needed to and from the landing, so we book jet boats to Pipiriki or Whakahoro with the ride.
- No phone coverage. There is no cell phone coverage, and DOC recommends carrying an emergency locator beacon on every ride.
- Weather. The track is slippery and muddy when wet, so we build a spare day into the programme where we can.
- Trail status. We check the official trail status before confirming dates, especially while the Kaiwhakauka works run.
