Short answer: Queenstown Airport recorded 2.82 million passenger movements in the year to 30 June 2026, including more than one million international movements for the first time. A NZ$65 million airfield programme with a new heavy taxiway is under way, and the airport says it stays fully operational during the works. Explera DMC New Zealand plans group arrivals and transfers.

Queenstown is the main air gateway for Central Otago, Fiordland and the Southern Lakes. This briefing is for travel agents and tour operators routing groups into Queenstown in the 2026–27 season and beyond.

How busy is Queenstown Airport?

  • A record year. The airport reported a record 2.82 million passenger movements in the year to 30 June 2026.
  • International growth. More than one million of those movements were international, the first time the airport has passed that mark.
  • Airlines. The airport names four airline partners: Air New Zealand, Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia. It describes Australia as a key market.
  • Aircraft movements. It recorded 19,678 scheduled aircraft movements in the same year.

What is being built?

  • A heavy taxiway. On 14 July 2026 the airport broke ground on a new heavy taxiway, part of a NZ$65 million airfield upgrade that also includes a full overlay of the main runway.
  • Why it matters. The airport says heavy aircraft will no longer need to backtrack along the runway, which should reduce delays and improve efficiency.
  • Timing. The airport's annual results on 19 August 2026 said the airfield programme is due for completion "by summer next year".
  • Flights continue. Works run on day and night shifts and are staged so the airport remains fully operational. Fulton Hogan is the main contractor.
  • More to come. The airport is developing concept designs for a terminal expansion and upgrade, including check-in, baggage handling and security screening. Construction of Airport House, a new office building, began in October 2026 and is due for completion in late 2027.

What does it mean for group arrivals?

  • Expect a busy terminal. With record passenger numbers, peak arrival times can be crowded. We meet groups at arrivals and keep the coach close to the terminal.
  • Build in buffer time. Queenstown's flights can be affected by weather in the mountains. We avoid tight same-day connections to a Milford Sound cruise or a first-night event.
  • Check the schedule at quotation. Trans-Tasman routes into Queenstown change by season, so we confirm the airline, days and times when we quote and again before ticketing.
  • Local touring. Arrowtown, Glenorchy, Wānaka and the Gibbston wine valley are all within a short drive of the airport.
