Wānaka for Groups: Lake, Mountains and a Quieter Base

10 October 2026 · Explera Trade Desk · 3 min read

Lake Wānaka and the village on its shore

Short answer: Wānaka is a lakeside town in Central Otago, about an hour and a quarter from Queenstown by road. It is smaller and quieter than Queenstown and works well as a one- or two-night stop for groups who want lake and mountain scenery without the crowds. The gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park is here.

Queenstown takes most of the attention in the region. Wānaka is a calmer alternative, and it fits well on the road between Queenstown and the east coast. This guide covers what it offers groups and how to include it.

Getting there

There are two roads from Queenstown:

  • Over the Crown Range. A short, scenic route that climbs high above the valley and descends the Cardrona Valley. It is sealed, but the road can be closed or need chains during snowstorms, so we avoid it for coaches in winter weather.
  • Via Cromwell. The longer, lower route beside the Kawarau Gorge, which is easier for coaches and in poor conditions.

Our drivers decide on the day, and we plan the longer road when weather is uncertain. See our Queenstown planning guide for the other side of this route.

What to include

  • Lake Wānaka. Lake cruises, a walk along the waterfront and the lake's famous lone tree make an easy first afternoon.
  • Mount Aspiring National Park. Wānaka is the main gateway, with scenic flights, valley walks and day trips into the park.
  • Local food and wine. Central Otago's wine region is close, and we can add a tasting stop on the way. See our wine regions guide.
  • Walks above the town. Popular lookouts are demanding hikes. We choose gentler options for most groups and check track status with the Department of Conservation (DOC) before we confirm.

Why include it

  • Quieter than Queenstown. Clients who found Queenstown busy often prefer an evening in Wānaka.
  • A sensible midpoint. It breaks the drive between Queenstown and Aoraki Mount Cook or the east coast. See our notes on the Aoraki Mackenzie region.
  • All seasons. Autumn colour is a highlight, winter brings snow sports nearby, and summer is warm and long.

What to brief your client on

  • Mountain weather changes quickly. Layers are essential, even in summer.
  • Summer is busy and rooms are limited. We book early for series.
  • Winter roads may need chains. Allow extra time between Queenstown and Wānaka.
