Short answer: At Auckland Airport the international and domestic terminals are separate buildings, about a 10-minute walk apart, with a free shuttle bus between them. Auckland Airport plans to open a new domestic jet terminal joined to the international terminal in 2029. Until then, Explera DMC New Zealand plans group connections with time for the transfer.

Most long-haul groups land in Auckland and many fly on to Queenstown, Christchurch or Rotorua, so this connection is part of a large share of New Zealand programmes.

How does the transfer work today?

  • Two buildings. The international and domestic terminals are separate. Passengers walk between them on a signposted path of about 10 minutes, or take the free inter-terminal shuttle bus.
  • Border first. Arriving passengers clear immigration, biosecurity and customs in the international terminal before any domestic flight.
  • Bags. Depending on the airline and the ticket, bags are either checked through or collected and checked in again. We confirm this for each booking.
  • Shuttle hours. The shuttle does not run all night. We check the current hours for early and late connections.

What changes in 2029?

Auckland Airport is building a new domestic jet terminal at the eastern end of the international terminal, so domestic jet flights and international flights will be under one roof. The airport's plan is a pier of 240 metres with 12 jet gates. In its half-year results to 31 December 2025, the airport said the project was on track for completion in 2029.

Until it opens, building work continues around the international terminal. We allow for it in our timings and check for changes to walkways and pick-up points.

How we plan group connections

  • Allow enough time. We build in time for the border, the bags and the walk or shuttle, and more for large groups or older clients.
  • Use a coach for big groups. For a large group with heavy luggage, a private coach between terminals can be easier than the shared shuttle.
  • Consider a first night in Auckland. After a long-haul flight, a night in Auckland before the domestic flight lowers the risk of a missed connection.
  • Brief clients before travel. We tell clients where to go after the border and who meets them.
