Lunar New Year 2027 in New Zealand: Group Planning

Short answer: Lunar New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February, the same day as Waitangi Day, and the festival season runs to the Lantern Festival on 20 February. Air New Zealand is adding Shanghai and Taipei flights for the peak. Explera DMC New Zealand books rooms, coaches and touring early for groups travelling in those weeks.

Lunar New Year 2027 opens the Year of the Goat. For New Zealand it is the busiest inbound fortnight of the summer from Greater China and much of Asia, and in 2027 it lands on a long weekend. This briefing is for travel agents and tour operators with groups in New Zealand in late January and February 2027.

When is Lunar New Year 2027?

  • The day itself. Lunar New Year's Day is Saturday 6 February 2027.
  • The season. Celebrations run for fifteen days and close with the Lantern Festival on Saturday 20 February 2027.
  • The New Zealand overlap. Waitangi Day is also Saturday 6 February 2027. Because it falls on a Saturday, the public holiday is observed on Monday 8 February.

That overlap is the detail most programmes miss. Inbound groups arrive for the festival just as New Zealanders take a long weekend, so the same rooms, coaches and attractions are wanted by both.

Which flights are being added for the peak?

  • Auckland–Shanghai. Air New Zealand plans 10 flights a week between Auckland and Shanghai Pudong across the peak, up from seven, until 20 February 2027. Reports put the extra capacity at more than 7,000 seats; the start date is given as 23 or 26 January depending on the source.
  • Auckland–Taipei. Schedule filings reported by AeroRoutes show Air New Zealand flying Auckland–Taipei daily from 25 January to 21 February 2027.
  • Last year's pattern. For the 2026 festival, Auckland Airport reported an 18% rise in seats between Auckland and China across January and February, with Air China going from seven to ten Beijing flights a week.

More seats bring more groups in the same weeks. That is good for demand and hard on ground capacity.

Where does the pressure show on the ground?

  • Arrival days. Auckland arrivals cluster around the extra flights. We plan meet-and-greet and coach pick-ups against the actual flight numbers, not a generic arrival window.
  • The icons. Milford Sound, Queenstown, Rotorua and Hobbiton feature on most festival itineraries. Morning departures and pre-booked cruise and tour times matter more in these weeks than at any other time of year.
  • The long weekend. Waitangi weekend fills coastal towns and the Bay of Islands with domestic travellers. Groups touring Northland that weekend need rooms held well ahead.
  • Lantern evenings. Auckland's BNZ Lantern Festival returns to Manukau Sports Bowl from 18 to 21 February 2027, according to the organiser. It falls in the last days of the festival season, so it suits groups still in Auckland that week as an optional evening.

What should agents plan for?

  • Hold rooms now. Secure the main touring stops first: Queenstown, Te Anau and Rotorua. Allotments with clear release dates protect the group without tying up rooms it will not use.
  • Coach capacity. Large coaches are in demand across the same fortnight. We confirm vehicles and driver hours when the group is confirmed, not closer to travel.
  • Visas and lead times. Groups that need visitor visas should apply early and allow for processing time before the summer peak.
  • Flex the order. Running the South Island first and Auckland last, or the reverse, can move a group away from the busiest days at each stop.

FAQ

When is Lunar New Year 2027? On Saturday 6 February 2027. The festival season ends with the Lantern Festival on Saturday 20 February 2027.

Does Lunar New Year 2027 clash with Waitangi Day? Yes. Waitangi Day is also Saturday 6 February 2027, and the public holiday is observed on Monday 8 February, so New Zealanders have a long weekend at the same time.

Is Air New Zealand adding flights from Shanghai for Lunar New Year 2027? Yes. It plans 10 Auckland–Shanghai flights a week across the peak, up from seven, until 20 February 2027.

What about flights from Taipei? Schedule filings show Air New Zealand flying Auckland–Taipei daily from 25 January to 21 February 2027. We confirm the schedule at quotation.

How early should a Lunar New Year group book? As early as possible. Rooms at the main touring stops and large coaches are the ones to secure, so we hold them with release dates as soon as a group is likely.
