Short answer: Explera DMC New Zealand books a group programme in the order its parts sell out. Department of Conservation (DOC) Great Walks huts open each May, staggered by track, and DOC reported that the Milford Track sold out in 34 minutes in May 2026. Peak-week lodges, ferry vehicle space and small-group tours follow as soon as dates are firm.
Lead time in New Zealand depends on what is being booked. A coach is rarely the problem. A hut on a Great Walk, a room in a small lodge or a vehicle space on a summer sailing can be. This guide sorts them by how early they go, with the dates DOC published for 2026/27.
When do Great Walks huts and campsites open?
DOC runs the booking system. For the 2026/27 season, with stays from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, bookings opened at 9.30 am NZST on staggered dates in May 2026:
- 12 May: Paparoa Track.
- 13 May: Milford Track.
- 14 May: Abel Tasman Coast Track.
- 15 May: Routeburn Track.
- 19 May: Kepler Track.
- 20 May: Heaphy Track, Whanganui Journey and Lake Waikaremoana Track.
- 21 May: Tongariro Northern Circuit and Rakiura Track.
DOC reported that Milford Track and Abel Tasman Coast Track huts both reached about 95 per cent occupancy last summer, and that the Milford Track sold out in 34 minutes this year, with a peak of 13,500 users online. DOC suggests checking regularly for cancellations. The Hump Ridge Track is booked through the Hump Ridge Trust, not DOC. We had not found DOC dates for the 2027/28 season as at October 2026, so check DOC before promising a client space. Our Great Walks guide explains the system.

What is changing on the Tongariro Northern Circuit?
DOC said on 4 September 2026 that the full Tongariro Northern Circuit will operate as a loop this summer, with the Mangatepopo Track on course to reopen, and that the new Oturere Hut and campsite will open for bookings from 18 December 2026. DOC said it would email visitors with affected bookings, who can change them or ask for a full refund. Check the DOC page before quoting the circuit.
Rooms and lodges
- Hold early for the peaks. December to February, the January school holidays and event weekends are the tightest. See our school and public holidays guide and the events calendar.
- Ask for the release date. A block of rooms is returned to the property if it is not confirmed by the release date. Get it in writing, with the rooming-list deadline.
- Small properties go first. Lodges and small-town motels have few rooms, so a group may need two properties. Ask early.
Ferries, flights and vehicles
- Cook Strait ferries. Summer sailings fill, and vehicle space is the part that runs short. Book the vehicle as well as the passengers as soon as dates are firm. See our rail and ferry guide.
- Rental vehicles. Cars and campervans are tightest from December to February. See our self-drive briefing.
- Domestic flights. Small aircraft and helicopters have few seats, so a large group may need several flights. Hold them with the programme.
Tours and experiences
Small-group tours, scenic flights and cruises with limited departures also go early. Weather-dependent products need a spare day, as in our scenic flights guide.

What should be booked first?
- First: huts and Great Walks, once DOC opens them, and lodges for the peak weeks.
- Second: rooms in the main centres, and ferry vehicle space.
- Third: coaches, guides and most day experiences.
- Always: confirm cancellation terms and release dates at quotation.
How Explera DMC New Zealand can help
We hold allotments and release dates for hotels and lodges, book the crossing alongside the vehicle through scenic rail and ferries, and work within DOC's booking system for Great Walks. Our accommodation planning page sets out the room types.
