Short answer: New Zealand school holidays and public holidays push domestic travel up, and rooms, rental cars and popular activities fill early. For 2027, school terms break in early April, early July, late September to early October and from mid-December. Matariki falls on Friday 25 June 2027. Check these dates against the Ministry of Education and employment.govt.nz before fixing a programme.
International groups share hotels, coaches and tracks with New Zealanders on holiday. Knowing the local calendar helps agents avoid the busiest dates, or at least book earlier for them. All dates here are as at October 2026 and should be confirmed.
2027 school terms
Published by the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Gazette:
- Term 1: starts between 28 January and 3 February, ends Friday 9 April 2027.
- Term 2: Tuesday 27 April to Friday 2 July 2027.
- Term 3: Monday 19 July to Friday 24 September 2027.
- Term 4: Monday 11 October to no later than Friday 17 December 2027.
The gaps between them are the school holidays: roughly 10 to 26 April, 3 to 18 July, 25 September to 10 October and from 18 December into the new year. Individual schools can vary at the start and end of the year.

What this means for groups
- Summer is the busiest period. The long summer break and the Christmas to New Year weeks fill coastal and holiday towns. See our month-by-month guide.
- Winter holidays hit ski towns. The July break coincides with the ski season, so Queenstown and other snow resorts book up.
- Long weekends fill driving routes and campgrounds. Self-drive clients should read our self-drive briefing.
- Huts and tracks. Popular trails book months ahead. See our Great Walks guide.

Using the calendar
- Quote early for dates that touch school holidays or long weekends.
- Move arrivals or departures a day to avoid a holiday Monday where possible.
- Ask hotels about minimum stays and release dates for these weeks.
- Treat our figures as planning guidance, not a guarantee of availability.
