Answer

How should agents think about the South Island?

The South Island has about 150,000 square kilometres and four trade regions: Nelson and Marlborough, Canterbury, the West Coast, and Queenstown, Fiordland and Otago. Christchurch to Queenstown is about 480 km, just under six hours without stops.

Why groups choose it

Why this theme sells.

The South Island is the landscape half of New Zealand: the Southern Alps, fiords, glaciers, lakes and wine. Distances are larger and the weather matters more.

Groups usually fly into Christchurch or Queenstown and out of the other, so the routing is a question of how many nights each region deserves.

Group logistics

What to check first.

  • Christchurch to Queenstown is about 480 km and just under six hours without stops, but a realistic day with stops is longer. Many groups fly or split the drive at Tekapo.
  • Alpine roads, particularly the Milford Road and the Haast Pass, can close with little warning. Keep a flexible day.
  • The South Island is reached from the North Island by air or by the Cook Strait ferries from Wellington to Picton.
