Why this theme sells.
Glaciers are one of the few places in the world where a coach day can end beside a river of ice in a temperate rainforest. They are also one of the least predictable products, because cloud grounds helicopters.
Sell the glacier as a region with a flexible slot, not as a fixed time on a fixed day.
Places and experiences to know.
Franz Josef Glacier / Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere
In Westland Tai Poutini National Park. DOC maintains a valley walk, but warns that the track and access road can close because of flooding, rockfall or landslides, and that the river has cut off access further up the valley.
Destination guideFox Glacier
In the same national park as Franz Josef. DOC’s south-side walk ends at a viewpoint and warns walkers not to go past it because of extreme flood hazard.
Destination guideHeli-hikes and scenic flights
Operators fly guests by helicopter to the ice for a guided walk of about two hours. Weather cancellations are common, so confirm backup options and a flexible day with the operator.
Destination guideTasman Glacier and Tasman Lake
New Zealand’s longest glacier, at about 23 km. Boat tours on its terminal lake, from Aoraki / Mount Cook Village, run roughly September to June and keep at least 500 m from the ice face.
Destination guideThe Haast Pass road
Wānaka to Franz Josef is about 3.5 to 4 hours by road. The route runs through Haast Pass and is single-lane for much of its length, so slips can close it.
Destination guideWhen it works.
The glaciers can be visited all year, though flights and heli-hikes depend on cloud and are cancelled often on the West Coast, which is wet in every season. Tasman Glacier boat tours run roughly from September to June because the lake freezes in winter.
See the full seasonal calendar for lead times and school holidays.
What to check first.
- Walk-up access to the ice has been limited by retreat and by river changes, which is why heli-hikes are the main way onto the glacier. Confirm current access at quotation.
- Keep a spare half-day on the West Coast in case flights are cancelled.
- Drones are not allowed anywhere in Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park for recreational use.
