Short answer: At Ōamaru Penguins, on Ōamaru Harbour, groups watch kororā (little penguins) come ashore after a day fishing at sea. The evening viewing starts around sunset, so its time moves through the year, and cameras and phones are not allowed. Premium seats must be booked. Explera DMC New Zealand fits the viewing into Christchurch–Dunedin coach programmes.

This briefing is for travel agents, tour operators and incentive planners routing groups down the east coast of the South Island between Christchurch and Dunedin.

What do groups see at Ōamaru?

  • The birds. Kororā are the world's smallest penguin, weighing about 1 kg, and the Department of Conservation (DOC) classes them as "at risk – declining".
  • The evening viewing. The colony describes watching the penguins return ashore after a day fishing at sea. They come in just after sunset, so arrival times vary through the year.
  • Two seating areas. The general grandstand seats up to 350 people, about 10–15 metres from the penguins. The premium area has individual seats for up to 60 people, a few metres from the birds, and bookings are essential for premium.
  • Daytime entry. A self-guided visit to the Discovery Centre and a walk through the colony and nesting area. Penguins are mostly at sea or in their nests by day; a viewing room lets visitors look inside special nest boxes. The colony says sightings are likely from August to February and cannot be guaranteed outside the breeding season.

How do timings work for a group?

  • Season by season. The colony's visit page says the evening viewing starts between 7pm and 9pm from October to March, and between 5pm and 6:30pm from April to September. We check the colony's chart for the exact date before we fix the dinner and the hotel transfer.
  • Length. The colony advises allowing one to two hours.
  • Daytime hours. Daytime entry opens every day from 10am until about an hour before the evening viewing.
  • Getting there. The colony is at 17 Waterfront Road, about five minutes from Ōamaru town centre. It gives the drive as about 3½ hours from Christchurch and 1½ hours from Dunedin, and the larger car park has room for buses.

What should clients be told before the viewing?

  • No cameras or phones. Cameras, filming devices and other electronics with bright screens are not allowed during the evening viewing. Daytime visitors may take photos without flash in the colony, but not in the viewing room.
  • Stay seated and quiet. If a penguin is nearby, visitors are asked to stay quiet and still.
  • Dress warmly. The colony says Ōamaru evenings can be chilly, even in summer.
  • Kororā face real pressure. On 29 October 2026 DOC reported that dog attacks on kororā reported to it rose from four in 2021 to 28 in 2025, with Auckland and coastal Otago recording the most incidents. Groups walking beaches near nesting areas should keep to the paths and give penguins space.
