Short answer: Explera DMC New Zealand plans the Whanganui Journey as a guided canoe trip for most groups. It is a Great Walk on water: 145 km from Taumarunui to Pipiriki over about five days, or 88 km from Whakahoro in about three. Jet boats reach the Bridge to Nowhere for clients who do not paddle.
The Whanganui River runs through Whanganui National Park, between Taumarunui and the coast. The Department of Conservation (DOC) runs the huts and campsites along it, and Māori culture is a central part of the river's story.
What are the trip options?
- The full journey. About 145 km from Taumarunui to Pipiriki, usually five days.
- The shorter journey. About 88 km from Whakahoro to Pipiriki, about three days.
- One- and two-day trips offered by local businesses.
- Jet boat. Part of the route and the Bridge to Nowhere without paddling.
During the Great Walks season, huts and campsites must be booked through DOC, and 2026/27 bookings are open. Outside the season they are first come, first served. DOC says May to the end of September is winter, when only very experienced winter paddlers should attempt the river.

Guided or independent?
DOC recommends a guided trip for less experienced paddlers. An independent trip needs canoeing experience, confident swimmers, the ability to paddle six to seven hours a day, nobody under 10, at least two people, and enough adults to supervise children. For most groups we book a guided trip or a jet boat day.
Brief clients on DOC's safety basics: life jackets on at all times, no mobile reception on the river so a distress beacon is carried, no alcohol on the water, and no setting off in rising or flood conditions. Water at huts and campsites is untreated, and no food is sold along the river. Freshwater rules apply too; see our Check, Clean, Dry briefing.
What about the Bridge to Nowhere?
The Bridge to Nowhere is reached from Mangapurua Landing, which needs a jet boat, on a gentle walk of about 40 minutes each way. The track is shared with mountain bikers and can be slippery and muddy, particularly in winter and early spring.
The walk is part of the Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono cycle trail. DOC and the Ngā Ara Tūhono Charitable Trust are installing 15 new bridges and boardwalks on its Mangapurua and Kaiwhakauka sections. Mangapurua works were scheduled between 1 August and mid-October 2026, and Kaiwhakauka works are scheduled for November and December 2026 with bypasses. Some full closures are needed, with DOC aiming to give two days' notice, so we check the trail status before confirming a ride.
