Answer

Where can clients stay somewhere with Māori or heritage character?

Kohutapu Lodge near Murupara is whānau-owned and hosts cultural tours; Te Arikinui Pullman at Auckland Airport is co-owned by Waikato-Tainui’s commercial arm. Larnach Castle, Otahuna and Wharekauhau add castle, homestead and station stays.

Why clients stay here

Why these stays sell.

Some stays carry the story of the place. At a whānau-owned lodge the hosts share their own home, land and history, and guests take part as visitors under tikanga, on the hosts’ terms.

Heritage stays work the same way for colonial history: a castle on the Otago Peninsula, a Victorian homestead outside Christchurch and a lodge on a working sheep station.

What to check before you quote.

  • Cultural stays follow the hosts’ guidance on timings, protocol and photography. We brief clients before they arrive.
  • Pass on dietary and accessibility needs at booking so hosts can prepare, especially where a hāngī or shared meal is included.
  • Heritage homes and station lodges have few rooms. For a small party, ask whether the whole property can be taken.
  • For a marae stay rather than a lodge, see our Māori cultural experiences service: each marae sets its own numbers and protocol.
