Geothermal and volcanic New Zealand, for the trade.
Steaming valleys, volcanic cones and alpine craters.

Where can groups see geothermal and volcanic New Zealand?
Rotorua, Taupō and Tongariro hold most of the geothermal and volcanic sightseeing groups buy, while Auckland’s volcanic cones add a city option. Walk lengths, boardwalk access and track status vary, so confirm each site at quotation.

Why this theme sells.
The central North Island sits on an active volcanic zone, so one coach day can pass a steaming valley, silica terraces, a river squeezed through a gorge and a snow-capped cone. Several sites have close Māori connections, which gives a group a cultural thread as well as a geological one.
Not every site suits every group: some are flat boardwalks and some are full-day alpine walks.
Places and experiences to know.
Whakarewarewa and Te Puia, Rotorua
Whakarewarewa is a living village in a geothermal valley, where residents guide visitors. Te Puia sits beside it and includes the Pōhutu geyser and the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute.
Destination guideWaimangu Volcanic Valley
A geothermal valley created by the Mount Tarawera eruption of 10 June 1886, with Frying Pan Lake and Inferno Crater Lake. The main walk is about 4 km and ends at Lake Rotomahana, where a boat cruise runs.
Destination guideTaupō’s geothermal sites
Orakei Korako, about 25 to 30 minutes north of Taupō, has geysers, silica terraces and coloured pools. Craters of the Moon has a loop walk of about 2.7 km, and Huka Falls, where the Waikato River drops about 11 m through a narrow gorge, is close to town.
Destination guideTongariro National Park
A dual World Heritage area recognised for its volcanic landscape and for its Māori cultural and spiritual significance. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19.4 km one-way day walk; DOC lists it at about 9 hours in winter conditions, so it is an alpine outing and not a casual stroll.
Destination guideAuckland’s volcanic field
Auckland is built on a field of dozens of small volcanoes; counts range from 48 to 53. Maungawhau / Mount Eden, at 196 m, is the highest on the isthmus, and Rangitoto Island, the youngest and largest, erupted around 600 years ago and is reached by ferry.
Destination guideWhakaari / White Island
Commercial landings stopped after the December 2019 eruption. As at October 2026 we could not confirm that they have resumed, so treat the island as unavailable unless an operator confirms current access in writing.
Destination guideWhen it works.
Geothermal sites operate all year, and the steam is most visible on cold days. Craters of the Moon is described as most active in the colder months from June to August. DOC treats winter conditions on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing as backcountry-level, so schedule it in the warmer months and keep a spare day.

What to check first.
- Most geothermal walks are boardwalks or short loops. Confirm surfaces and distances against each client’s mobility at quotation.
- Track closures after fire, slips or weather do happen in the national park, so keep a fallback day for any alpine walk.
- Cultural venues run shared tours at set times. Entry times and group sizes are confirmed at quotation.

What agents ask about this theme.
Can groups visit Whakaari / White Island?
Landings stopped after the December 2019 eruption, and as at October 2026 we could not confirm that they have resumed. Treat the island as unavailable unless an operator confirms current access in writing.
Is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing suitable for groups?
It is a 19.4 km one-way alpine day walk, listed by DOC at about 9 hours in winter conditions, so it suits fit, well-equipped walkers. Groups of mixed fitness are usually better served by the shorter geothermal walks around Rotorua and Taupō.
