Why groups choose it

Why this theme sells.

The parks are where the scenery clients came for actually is: fiords, glaciers, volcanoes and coast. Each has its own gateway town, its own weather and its own limits on what a group can do.

Plan around the gateway rather than the park boundary. Te Anau, Aoraki / Mount Cook Village, Taupō and Nelson each decide where the group sleeps and how long the transfer is.

Where to start

Places and experiences to know.

Fiordland National Park

The largest park, at about 1.26 million hectares, in the south-west of the South Island. Piopiotahi Milford Sound is the only fiord reachable by road, while Pātea Doubtful Sound is reached by boat across Lake Manapouri and then by coach over the Wilmot Pass.

Destination guide

Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park

Home of New Zealand’s highest mountain and the Tasman Glacier. The Hooker Valley Track is about 10 km return and takes around three hours; check DOC for current track status before each departure.

Destination guide

Tongariro National Park

A dual World Heritage area, one of only 29 such sites in the world, recognised for its volcanic landscape and for its Māori cultural and spiritual associations.

Destination guide

Abel Tasman National Park

The smallest of the parks, opened on 18 December 1942, with a coastline of beaches and bays that is walked, paddled or cruised. Nelson is the usual base.

Destination guide

Paparoa National Park

Home of the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, a sealed 1.1 km loop of about 20 minutes. DOC says the blowholes are at their best around high tide with a south-westerly swell.

Destination guide

Westland Tai Poutini National Park

The park that holds the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers on the West Coast. Valley walks reach viewpoints and conditions change, so see the glaciers page.

Destination guide

Rakiura National Park

Covers about 85% of Stewart Island and includes the Rakiura Track, one of the Great Walks.

Best months

When it works.

Summer (December to February) is the main season for walking in every park, autumn is often settled and quieter, and winter brings snow to the alpine parks and can close mountain roads at short notice.

See the full seasonal calendar for lead times and school holidays.

Group logistics

What to check first.

  • Tracks and roads close after storms, slips and fire. DOC publishes alerts, so keep an alternative for every park day.
  • Great Walk huts are booked in advance through DOC. See the walking page for how the booking windows work.
  • Gateway towns have limited beds in summer, so hold rooms early for Te Anau, Aoraki / Mount Cook Village and the glacier villages.
