Why this theme sells.
New Zealand is sold on landscape, but the cities are where flights land, ferries dock and groups sleep. Each has one thing it does better than anywhere else, and that is what a short stay should be built around.
City stays also give the best value in winter, when the mountains are harder to programme.
Places and experiences to know.
Auckland / Tāmaki Makaurau
The largest city, in a region of more than 1.8 million people according to Stats NZ for the year to June 2025. It is the main international gateway and sits on a field of small volcanoes, with ferries to Waiheke and Rangitoto.
Destination guideWellington / Te Whanganui-a-Tara
The capital. Te Papa, the national museum on the waterfront, is free to enter apart from some exhibitions, and the cable car, running since 1902, climbs to the Botanic Garden. Zealandia is a fenced eco-sanctuary about ten minutes’ drive from the centre.
Destination guideChristchurch / Ōtautahi
The South Island’s main gateway. The Botanic Gardens, founded in 1863, cover 21 hectares, and the Riverside Market beside the Avon is open daily. The TranzAlpine train starts here.
Destination guideDunedin / Ōtepoti
Larnach Castle, built in the 1870s, is described as New Zealand’s only castle, and the Otago Peninsula has a mainland royal albatross colony.

Rebuilt in Art Deco style after the 1931 earthquake. The Art Deco Festival is held in February each year with more than 200 events; confirm the dates for any given year.
Destination guideHamilton and Waikato
Known for its gardens and as the base for Hobbiton and Waitomo day trips.
Destination guideWhen it works.
Cities work in every season, and winter and the shoulder months are good value for city and culture programmes. Napier’s Art Deco Festival is a mid-February event, so rooms there are tight.
See the full seasonal calendar for lead times and school holidays.
What to check first.
- Airports differ: Auckland and Christchurch are the principal international arrival points, Wellington is mostly trans-Tasman and domestic, and Queenstown has domestic and some international links.
- Event weekends and cruise days tighten city rooms. See the seasons pages and confirm at quotation.
