New Zealand’s beaches and coast, for the trade.
Long beaches, sea rock and sheltered bays.

Which New Zealand coastal places suit group programmes?
Ninety Mile Beach, Cathedral Cove, the Abel Tasman coast, the Pancake Rocks and the Catlins each give a different kind of coast. Access changes after storms, so confirm status with DOC and the operator before each departure.

Why this theme sells.
New Zealand’s coast is varied rather than tropical: long surf beaches in the north, sandstone and limestone in the west, and rugged southern headlands. That variety is the selling point.
Coastal sites are also the ones most affected by storms, so a short access check before each departure protects the day.
Places and experiences to know.
Ninety Mile Beach / Te Oneroa-a-Tōhē
About 88 km long by most counts, despite its name, and ending roughly 10 km south of Cape Reinga. It is usually visited on a day trip from the Bay of Islands.
Destination guideMautohe Cathedral Cove
In the most recent DOC update we found, from mid-2026, the main track was open but the area is naturally unstable and can close at short notice. The Hahei Short Walk and the Waimata–Gemstone Bay track were closed, and DOC has proposed removing them.
Destination guideAbel Tasman coast
Golden beaches and bays on the coast of the smallest national park, walked, paddled or cruised. The coast track is one of the Great Walks, and Nelson is the usual base.
Destination guidePunakaiki Pancake Rocks
Limestone about 30 million years old, shaped into stacked layers by rain, wind and sea. The loop is 1.1 km, and the site is 44 km north of Greymouth and 57 km south of Westport.
Destination guidePiha and the Auckland west coast
Piha is a black-sand surf beach about an hour’s drive from Auckland, on the edge of the Waitākere Ranges, with Lion Rock rising 101 m between its two halves. It suits an Auckland half-day.
Destination guideThe Catlins coast
A remote southern coast on the Southern Scenic Route between Dunedin and Invercargill. The Nugget Point lighthouse, opened in 1870 on a headland 76 m above the sea, is an easy walk of about 20 minutes from the car park.
Destination guideWhen it works.
Summer (December to February) is the warmest and the domestic holiday peak. Late summer can bring ex-tropical storms to the upper North Island, so keep northern routings flexible. Autumn is settled and quieter.
See the full seasonal calendar for lead times and school holidays.
What to check first.
- Check DOC track status before each departure. Cathedral Cove has changed status several times since 2023.
- Sea access to some coves is possible but carries rockfall risk, so DOC advises thinking carefully before using it.
- Beach driving, boat trips and kayak days depend on tide and wind. Confirm at quotation.
