Short answer: Hamilton Airport has had international flights again since June 2025, when Jetstar started services from Sydney and the Gold Coast. For Australian groups heading to the Waikato, it can replace the drive from Auckland. Explera DMC New Zealand checks the current schedule and plans the ground programme around the Hamilton arrival.
The Waikato Times reported in September 2026 that passenger numbers at Hamilton Airport had grown strongly since the international flights began, and that the airport was in talks about two more routes.
What international flights does Hamilton have?
- Sydney. Jetstar's first flight from Sydney landed in Hamilton on 16 June 2025, the first international arrival there in 13 years. At launch the route ran four times a week, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
- Gold Coast. The Gold Coast service started on 18 June 2025 and ran three times a week at launch, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
- More routes? Hamilton Airport said in September 2026 that two more routes were under discussion. The destinations have not been named, so we do not plan around them yet.
Schedules change by season, so we confirm the current days and times at quotation.

Why does Hamilton matter for groups?
- It is in the Waikato. Hamilton is the main city of the region that holds the Hobbiton Movie Set, Waitomo's glowworm caves and Hamilton Gardens.
- Less time on the road. A group that lands in Hamilton starts its programme in the Waikato instead of driving south from Auckland on day one.
- Open-jaw options. A group can fly into Hamilton and leave from Auckland, Christchurch or Queenstown, or the other way round. We check how the flights fit before we build the itinerary.
What should agents check before booking?
- Days of operation. With a few flights a week, the arrival day sets the start of the programme. Build the itinerary around the flight, not the other way round.
- Seats for the whole group. Ask the airline about group seats early, before you fix the dates with the client.
- Coach and guide at the airport. A regional airport has fewer services on the spot, so we book the coach, driver and guide to meet the flight.
- A backup. If the flight changes, Auckland is the fallback gateway. We plan the transfer that would be needed.
