Australian Groups to New Zealand: Planning Notes for Agents

Short answer: Explera DMC New Zealand plans short programmes for Australian groups, New Zealand's largest visitor market. Stats NZ counted 134,900 visitor arrivals from Australia in July 2026, up 6% and a record for a July month. Australian citizens need no NZeTA, so the work is in rooms, transfers and timing.

Australia is New Zealand's nearest major market. Groups can fly in for a long weekend, a conference or a ski week, which makes lead times shorter and peaks sharper than for markets further away.

What do the latest figures say?

Stats NZ's International travel release for July 2026 showed:

  • 256,600 overseas visitor arrivals in July 2026, up 8.5% on July 2025 and above July 2019.
  • 134,900 arrivals from Australia, up 6% and a record for a July month.
  • 3.69 million arrivals in the year to July 2026, up 9%.

We date every figure because monthly arrivals move. Check the latest Stats NZ release before quoting numbers to a client.

What should agents check on entry?

Australian citizens travelling on an Australian passport do not need an NZeTA or a visa and do not pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy. Other passport holders in the same group may need one, so check every passport on the rooming list. Our entry requirements guide sets out the rules.

How do we plan trans-Tasman programmes?

  • Fly into the right gateway. Queenstown and Christchurch take trans-Tasman flights as well as Auckland, so a South Island programme need not start in the north.
  • Plan around peaks. Winter brings ski groups to Queenstown, and the school holidays on both sides of the Tasman fill rooms. See New Zealand in July and our Queenstown guide.
  • Keep it short and dense. Many trips are short, so we cut transfer time and put the highlights close to the gateway.
  • Conferences and incentives. See our MICE and incentives guide.
