Waitomo and Hobbiton: Planning a Waikato Day for Groups

Short answer: Waitomo's glowworm caves and the Hobbiton Movie Set are both in the Waikato, south of Auckland, but they are about an hour and a half apart by road. Doing both in one day from Auckland is possible and long. For groups we usually split them across the drive from Auckland to Rotorua, with timed entries booked well ahead.

Waitomo and Hobbiton are two of the most requested North Island experiences, and they are often sold together because they sit in the same region. The detail that matters for a programme is the driving between them, and the fact that both run on timed, guided entries that fill up. This guide sets out how we route them, what each involves, and what to tell the client.

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves

Waitomo is a limestone cave area in the King Country, at the southern edge of the Waikato. The best-known experience is a guided walk through the main cave, finishing with a quiet boat ride under a ceiling lit by thousands of glowworms. The glowworm is a species found only in New Zealand.

The caves have a long Māori history. They were first explored with local chief Tane Tinorau in 1887 and opened to visitors soon after. Government control followed, and in 1989 the land and caves were returned to the descendants of the original owners. Many of the guides today are descendants of Tane Tinorau and his wife Huti, and their stories are part of the tour.

Other caves in the area offer different experiences, from walking tours to adventure options such as black-water rafting for active clients. We match the cave to the group.

The Hobbiton Movie Set

The Hobbiton Movie Set sits on a working farm near Matamata, in rolling Waikato farmland. It was built for the film trilogies and is now a permanent set. Visits are by guided tour only, and the operator's current tours include time inside a furnished hobbit hole. Tours finish at the Green Dragon Inn on the set.

Hobbiton also runs evening tours with a banquet, and seasonal events such as its Christmas evenings, listed for 18 and 19 December 2026. These sell out early and are worth raising with clients who will be in the area on those dates. For incentive groups, the operator has function options; we check availability for each brief.

Drive times and how we route them

As a guide, by road:

  • Auckland to Waitomo: about two and a half to three hours.
  • Auckland to Hobbiton (Matamata): about two hours.
  • Waitomo to Hobbiton: about an hour and a half.
  • Hobbiton to Rotorua: about an hour.

Times grow with traffic leaving Auckland, coach stops and weather, so we plan on the generous side. Three routings work well:

  • Auckland to Rotorua via both (one long day). Leave Auckland early, visit Waitomo late morning, Hobbiton mid-afternoon, and arrive in Rotorua in the evening. It works for fit, keen groups, but it is a full day on the road.
  • Split over two days (our usual advice). Auckland to Waitomo on day one with an overnight nearby, then Hobbiton and on to Rotorua on day two. Calmer for families, older travellers and large coaches.
  • Hobbiton only, as a day out from Auckland or Rotorua. For clients who are not interested in caves, or who are short on time.

Timed entries and group sizes

Both experiences run on fixed departure times with set group sizes. A large coach group may be split into two or more tour departures, which changes the timing of the day. We confirm:

  • the departure times for each part of the group;
  • the meeting points and how long before departure the group must arrive;
  • coach parking and the walk from the coach to the start;
  • meal stops that fit around the timed entries.

In the busiest months (December to February, and school holidays), popular times fill well in advance. Book these experiences when the itinerary is confirmed, not near departure.

What to brief your client on

  • No photography in the glowworm grotto. Cameras and phones must stay away in the main glowworm area; light and noise disturb the glowworms. The guides explain this at the start.
  • Caves are cool and can be damp. Bring a light jacket and comfortable, closed shoes. There are steps and uneven paths.
  • Access needs. Some caves are easier to reach than others. Tell us about mobility needs early and we will choose the right option.
  • Hobbiton is outdoors. The set is on a hillside farm. Clients need walking shoes, sun protection in summer and a rain jacket in winter. Tours run in most weather.
  • It is a farm. Clients are visitors on a working property, and they should stay with the guide.
