Short answer: The New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) opened in central Auckland on 11 February 2026. It has a 2,850-seat theatre, 33 meeting spaces and room for more than 4,000 delegates. Explera DMC New Zealand builds the programme around it: hotels, transfers, partner tours and pre- and post-touring.
For years New Zealand's largest conferences had to fit into hotel ballrooms or spread across several venues. The NZICC changes that for Auckland, and it changes what planners can now ask a New Zealand DMC to deliver.
What has opened?
The NZICC opened its doors on Wednesday 11 February 2026, in the Auckland city centre. According to the centre's own announcement:
- A 2,850-seat theatre for plenary sessions, concerts and large launches.
- 33 meeting spaces for breakouts, workshops and board meetings.
- Capacity for more than 4,000 delegates across its event spaces.
- More than 100 events were confirmed for 2026 before it opened.
The venue books its own spaces. Our role is everything around the event.

What does it mean for agents and planners?
- Bigger events can stay in one city. A congress that once needed two venues can now meet under one roof in Auckland.
- Rooms become the constraint. When a large event is on, central Auckland hotels fill. Hold rooms early and ask the venue which other events share your dates.
- Delegates want more than the conference. Partner programmes, day tours and pre- or post-touring add value and spread the group around the country.
- Auckland is the arrival point. Most long-haul flights land in Auckland, so delegates arrive and leave close to the venue.
How do we plan a conference group around the NZICC?
- Confirm the venue dates first. We work from the dates the organiser holds with the venue.
- Block rooms in the city centre. We hold a mix of hotels within walking distance where we can.
- Plan arrivals and departures. Airport transfers run by coach; there is no train to Auckland Airport.
- Add the programme around the event. Welcome dinners, harbour cruises, Hauraki Gulf island days, Rotorua or Waitomo touring, and post-conference trips to the South Island.
