Auckland City Rail Link: What It Means for Groups

Short answer: Auckland's City Rail Link (CRL) opened to passengers on Sunday 13 September 2026. Trains now run through a 3.45 km twin tunnel under the city centre, with new stations at Te Waihorotiu, Karanga-a-Hape and Maungawhau. Explera DMC New Zealand still moves groups by coach, but the rail line adds options for free time.

The CRL is the largest transport project Auckland has built. For a visiting group, the change is not in how they arrive but in how easily they can get around the city on their own.

What has opened?

According to Auckland Transport and 1News:

  • Opening day: passenger services began on Sunday 13 September 2026, with the first weekday timetable from Monday 14 September.
  • The tunnel: a 3.45 km twin-tunnel railway under the city centre.
  • New stations: Te Waihorotiu in midtown, Karanga-a-Hape off Karangahape Road, and Maungawhau.
  • Through trains: trains now run through the city centre instead of ending at Waitematā (Britomart) station.
  • Timetable: services started on a transitional timetable, and Auckland Transport has committed to a full timetable within six months of opening.

What does it change for groups?

  • Free time in the city is easier. Clients staying in the city centre can reach midtown, Karangahape Road and the inner suburbs by train.
  • Group transfers stay by coach. There is no train to Auckland Airport, and a coach is still the simplest way to move a group with luggage.
  • Expect change for a few months. Timetables are still building up, so we check them before we suggest rail for a free afternoon.

How do we plan Auckland city days now?

  • Coach for transfers and touring. Airport arrivals, hotel moves and day trips run by coach.
  • Rail for free time. We brief clients on the nearest station to their hotel and how to pay their fare.
  • Check before you print. We confirm timetables close to travel, because the full timetable is still being introduced.
