Short answer: Te Anau is the small town on Lake Te Anau that serves as the base for Fiordland. It sits at the start of the road to Milford Sound and close to the Lake Manapouri departures for Doubtful Sound. Two nights there give a group time for one sound plus a short walk or lake outing, without a rushed day trip from Queenstown.
Many programmes visit Fiordland as a long day from Queenstown. That works, but it leaves clients tired and the weather can decide the day. Staying in Te Anau changes the pace. This guide explains when we recommend it.
Why use Te Anau as a base
- Closer to both sounds. The Milford Road starts here, and the Doubtful Sound boat leaves from Manapouri, about 20 minutes away by road. See our guides to Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound.
- A buffer for weather. Fiordland is wet and roads can close. A night in Te Anau lets us move a sound cruise by a day.
- Less time on the coach. An early start from Te Anau shortens the day compared with driving out and back from Queenstown.
What to include
- Lake Te Anau. A cruise or a walk beside the lake is an easy first-day activity.
- The Kepler Track. One of the Great Walks, a multi-day loop beginning near the town. Most groups walk only short sections as a day walk, and huts for the full track must be booked through DOC. See our Great Walks guide.
- Fiordland's sounds. Milford or Doubtful, usually one rather than both.
- Wildlife and native bush. Short forest walks suit groups who are not hikers.

How many nights
- One night works as a minimum, with a cruise the next morning.
- Two nights give a rest day, flexibility for weather, and time for a lake outing.
- More nights suit walkers and nature-focused groups.
Accommodation in Te Anau is limited, and summer and school holidays fill quickly. We hold rooms early for group series. For other options, see our notes on hotels and lodges.
What to brief your client on
- Rain is normal. Waterproofs matter more than sunscreen.
- Sandflies are common near water. Repellent is worth packing.
- Distances are longer than they look. The sounds are a full day, not a short stop.
