Summer

New Zealand in January — a trade planning guide.

Peak summer, and the tightest inventory of the year.

Is January a good month to sell New Zealand?

Yes for weather, hard for inventory. January is peak summer with the longest days, but New Zealand families are on their school holidays and Chinese New Year may fall late in the month, so groups need rooms held well ahead.

Summer in New Zealand

The January picture.

January is high summer and the height of the domestic holiday season: long days, warm weather, and beds, campervans and coaches committed months ahead.

Warm across both islands. The upper North Island is often humid, the South Island is drier and cooler at altitude, and daylight runs late into the evening, especially in the south.

The trade brief

What January does to a New Zealand file.

From before Christmas into late January New Zealand is on its long summer school holidays, and the domestic market fills beach towns, lakes and holiday parks. Chinese New Year falls in late January or February depending on the year and adds inbound pressure on Auckland, Rotorua and Queenstown. Cruise ships are in port through the summer and take coaches and guides on ship days. Hold accommodation, campervans and coaches early; for groups, a year ahead is not too early.

Where January goes wrong.
