Why this theme sells.
Lakes anchor the towns groups actually stay in: Taupō, Queenstown, Te Anau, Wānaka and Tekapo. A lake gives the free hour in a programme something to do, from a short cruise to a lakeside walk.
Lake towns also fill first in the school holidays, so they are the beds to hold early.
Places and experiences to know.
Lake Taupō
The largest lake in New Zealand, at roughly 620 square kilometres, in the caldera of a volcano. Huka Falls and several geothermal sites are close to the town.
Destination guideLake Wakatipu
The longest lake in the country, at about 80 km, and the third largest by area. Queenstown sits on its shore and Glenorchy at its head.
Destination guideLake Te Anau
The largest lake in the South Island and the second largest in the country, at roughly 344 square kilometres. The town is the gateway to Fiordland and Milford Sound.
Destination guideLakes Tekapo and Pukaki
Two lakes in the Mackenzie Basin inside the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve, with the Southern Alps and Aoraki / Mount Cook as the backdrop.
Destination guideLake Wānaka
The lake beside Wānaka, a base for programmes that want a quieter alternative to Queenstown. The Roys Peak Track is 16 km return and DOC suggests five to six hours; it is closed for lambing from 1 October to 10 November.
Destination guideLake Waikaremoana
Its track is a 46 km Great Walk through Te Urewera, which DOC suggests walking over three nights and four days. It suits groups who want a multi-day lake walk in the North Island.
When it works.
Summer (December to February) is the lake season, with long evenings and the busiest bookings. Autumn colour around the Otago and Mackenzie lakes arrives in April and May, and winter brings snow to the surrounding peaks.

What to check first.
- Lake towns are the first to sell out between Christmas and late January. Hold rooms early.
- Doubtful Sound is reached by boat across Lake Manapouri, so the day is fixed by the boat and coach timings. Confirm at quotation.
- Cruises and lake activities depend on wind and visibility. Keep a flexible slot for them.
