Short answer: Air New Zealand's first Boeing 787-9 with an increased maximum take-off weight landed in Auckland on 29 October 2026, with a second aircraft to follow within days. The airline says the aircraft gives more flexibility on ultra long-haul flights, particularly Auckland–New York. The Economy Skynest will be installed only after the peak summer period, and no new launch date has been set.
This briefing is for travel agents and tour operators who send groups to New Zealand on long-haul flights, above all from North America. It covers what the new aircraft change and what clients should not be promised this summer.
What has Air New Zealand announced?
- A new 787-9. The first aircraft, registered ZK-NZT, landed in Auckland on the evening of 29 October 2026. A second, ZK-NZS, follows within days.
- More payload. Air New Zealand says the aircraft has an increased maximum take-off weight and is designed for ultra long-haul flying, with more flexibility for passengers, baggage and cargo, particularly on Auckland–New York.
- Four cabins. Both aircraft have Business Premier Luxe, Business Premier, Premium Economy and Economy seats.
- Skynest comes later. The Economy Skynest will be installed after the peak summer travel period. The new 787-9 enters service without it, and the airline says it will confirm a new Skynest launch date once the timeline is clear.

What should agents tell group clients?
- Do not sell Skynest for this summer. The airline has said it will be installed after the peak summer period, so a summer group should not expect it.
- Confirm the cabin at booking. Aircraft can change on any route. The airline or the agency confirms the aircraft and cabin; we plan the ground programme around the confirmed flight.
- Plan an easy first day. After an ultra long-haul flight, we keep the first day in Auckland light, with an early check-in or a day room where the arrival is early.
- Entry rules. Most visitors need an NZeTA or a visa before they travel. See our New Zealand entry requirements briefing.
