Tākina Wellington Convention Centre: Conference Groups

26 October 2026 · Explera Trade Desk · 3 min read

Wellington's central city, home to the Tākina Wellington Convention Centre, with the harbour and hills beyond

Short answer: Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre hosts conferences of 300 to 1,600 delegates, across the street from Te Papa in central Wellington. On 14 October 2026 Wellington was named host of the Indigenous Wellbeing Conference at Tākina in October 2027. Explera DMC New Zealand plans rooms, transfers and programmes for conference groups.

Tākina is Wellington's purpose-built convention centre. This briefing is for MICE planners, conference organisers and tour operators who are weighing Wellington for a meeting, an association congress or a conference with a touring programme.

What is the Tākina Wellington Convention Centre?

  • The venue. Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre is in central Wellington. Te Papa, the national museum, is directly across the street.
  • Size. A MICE industry profile published in August 2025 describes Tākina as suited to conferences of 300 to 1,600 delegates, with more than 10,000 m² of flexible meeting space.
  • Two venues together. Tākina Events runs Tākina and Te Papa as two neighbouring venues, which gives a conference a museum setting for an evening event.
  • Sustainability. The same profile says Tākina was the first convention centre in New Zealand to achieve a 5-Star Green Star Design rating from the New Zealand Green Building Council.

What is booked for 2027?

  • The Indigenous Wellbeing Conference. Inside Government reported on 14 October 2026 that the conference will be held at Tākina from 10 to 12 October 2027.
  • Delegates. Up to 400 delegates are expected from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
  • The organiser. The Australian & New Zealand Mental Health Association runs the conference, and the bid was supported by Business Events Wellington and Tourism New Zealand Business Events.
  • Why it matters. Wellington is New Zealand's capital and home to Parliament, which the bid partners named as a reason to meet there. Rooms in central Wellington are tighter during large conferences, so we hold them early.

How does Wellington work for a conference group?

  • A compact centre. Hotels, the waterfront, Te Papa and Tākina are close together, so many delegates can walk between them.
  • Getting there. Wellington Airport has domestic links across New Zealand and flights from Australia. We plan arrival transfers by coach for groups.
  • The ferry link. Wellington is the North Island end of the Cook Strait ferry, so a programme can continue to Picton and the Marlborough Sounds.
  • Weather. Wellington is known for wind. We plan outdoor parts of a programme with an indoor alternative.

What should planners book first?

  • Dates and rooms. Confirm the venue dates, then hold hotel rooms with a release date as soon as the meeting is likely.
  • Pre- and post-touring. Wairarapa wine country, the Kāpiti Coast and the South Island by ferry or air all work around a Wellington conference.
  • Venue details. Room sizes, catering and technical services are confirmed with the venue. We coordinate the ground arrangements around them.
