Short answer: For the 2026/27 Great Walk season, DOC runs the Tongariro Northern Circuit one way, from Mangatepopo Carpark to Whakapapa Village. The new Oturere Hut and campsite open for bookings from 18 December 2026. Explera DMC New Zealand plans the transfers, huts and guides for walking groups.

This briefing is for travel agents and tour operators who sell multi-day walks in the central North Island. The circuit is a three- or four-day walk in Tongariro National Park and shares part of its route with the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

What has changed for 2026/27?

  • A one-way route. DOC's track page says the track starts at Mangatepopo Carpark and ends in Whakapapa Village for the 2026/27 season.
  • One section closed. The section between Whakapapa Village and Mangatepopo is closed after the 2025 Tongariro fire and will not be available for the 2026/27 Great Walk season.
  • Oturere Hut. On 4 September 2026 DOC said poor weather had delayed building work, and the new hut and campsite open for bookings from 18 December 2026.
  • Not yet a Great Walk. DOC's track page says the circuit is not operating as a Great Walk while Oturere Hut is replaced, and that the Great Walk returns for the 2026/27 season.

Earlier reports described a full loop this summer. We follow DOC's current track page and check it again at quotation.

What do groups need to book?

  • Huts and campsites. Bookings are required all year, and bookings are open for 2026/27. The huts are Mangatepopo, Oturere and Waihohonu.
  • Fees. DOC sets separate hut and campsite fees for international visitors in the Great Walk season. We confirm the current fees at booking.
  • Transfers. Parking at Mangatepopo Carpark is limited to 4 hours in the Great Walk season, so groups need a shuttle to the start. Bus and train services stop at National Park Village, 15 km from Whakapapa Village.
  • Day walkers. People running the circuit in a day need a Tongariro Alpine Crossing booking. Walkers with a circuit hut or campsite booking do not need a separate one.

Who is the circuit right for?

  • Fit walkers. DOC describes the terrain as difficult, exposed and uneven, and does not recommend the track for children under 10.
  • Alpine weather. Weather can change quickly, and winds can be severe. The track crosses active volcanic vents.
  • Summer only for most groups. From May to October the circuit is not a Great Walk and needs alpine skills and equipment. We sell it from late October to April.
