Short answer: New Zealand's cruise season runs through the southern spring and summer, with ships calling at ports from Auckland and the Bay of Islands to Dunedin and Fiordland. Agents add value in three places: private shore excursions on port days, a land stay before or after the cruise, and checking that every passenger holds an NZeTA before sailing.
Cruise clients see New Zealand in short windows. A ship may be alongside for eight or nine hours, and the line's own excursions sell out or move at the pace of the largest coach. A well-planned private day, or two or three nights on land at either end, turns a cruise into a New Zealand programme. This guide covers how we plan both.
The cruise season
Most ships arrive between October and April. For the 2026/27 season the New Zealand Cruise Association forecast about 642 port calls and around 223,500 passengers, at a similar level to the year before, and Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said more than 200,000 cruise passengers were expected. Princess Cruises has said it plans to double its New Zealand port calls from the 2028/29 season.
The main ports of call include Auckland, the Bay of Islands, Tauranga, Napier, Wellington, Picton, Lyttelton for Christchurch, Akaroa and Dunedin, with scenic cruising in Fiordland. Schedules change by line and by year, so we work from each ship's published port times.

Planning a private shore day
- Work back from all-aboard time. We plan the return to the port with a clear margin, because a ship does not wait for a late tour. Traffic, road works and weather all count.
- Pick one theme per port. From Tauranga, the Rotorua geothermal area or a Hobbiton visit; from Napier, Art Deco and Hawke's Bay wine; from Lyttelton, Christchurch or Banks Peninsula; from Dunedin, the Otago Peninsula wildlife.
- Size the vehicle to the party. Private touring works well for families and small groups, from a car with a driver-guide to a mini-coach.
- Book early on busy days. When two ships are in port, guides, vehicles and popular attractions fill quickly.

Before and after the cruise
Many New Zealand itineraries start or end in Auckland, and some begin or finish in Australia. A land stay at either end protects the embarkation day against a delayed flight and gives clients time to see more of the country:
- Before the cruise: two or three nights in Auckland, with a day on the Hauraki Gulf or an extension to the Bay of Islands. See our Auckland stopover guide.
- After the cruise: a short programme to Rotorua, Queenstown or the South Island before the flight home.

Entry rules for cruise passengers
All cruise ship passengers need an NZeTA before travelling to New Zealand, whatever their nationality, unless they hold a visa or are exempt. Most also pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) with it. Passengers who fly in to join a ship in Auckland must meet the normal entry rules for their passport. Confirm current conditions on the Immigration New Zealand website, and see our entry requirements guide.
