Short answer: Air New Zealand reported that 87.3% of its flights arrived on time in September 2026, up from 85.3% in August and 75.5% a year earlier. Cancellations fell to 1.4%. Explera DMC New Zealand still builds buffer time into every group connection, because a good month does not guarantee a good day.

The figures were reported by the trade publication Travel Today on 14 October 2026. On-time means arriving within 15 minutes of schedule.

What did Air New Zealand report?

  • On-time performance of 87.3% in September 2026. That compares with 85.3% in August 2026 and 75.5% in September 2025. Travel Today reported a global average of 77.7% for the month.
  • Regional services at 90.3%. These are the smaller aircraft that fly to regional airports.
  • Fewer cancellations. 1.4% of flights were cancelled in September, down from 2.5% in August and 3.3% a year earlier.
  • 13,072 flights operated in the month.
  • A new boarding process. Air New Zealand calls it pre-staging: crews prepare the gate and the customers so that general boarding can start as soon as the aircraft is ready. It became the standard process for all departures from New Zealand airports on 1 October 2026.

What does it mean for a group?

  • Keep the buffer. A better monthly average is welcome, but one late flight can still break a tight connection. We do not plan a group onto the last possible connection of the day.
  • Check-in takes longer for a group. A large group with checked bags needs more time at the counter than individual travellers. We plan airport arrival times around that.
  • Board when called. With the new boarding process, the gate is ready earlier. Ask tour leaders to keep the group together and close to the gate.
  • Have a plan for a missed connection. We keep transfers and hotels flexible on travel days and contact suppliers if a flight is late.

How Explera DMC New Zealand can help

We plan domestic flights, transfers and coach days as one programme, so a late flight changes the plan in one place. See our Air New Zealand and Qantas codeshare note, our driving times and coach days guide, coach and private transfers and group tours.
