Milford Track 2026/27: Groups Guide

26 October 2026 · Explera Trade Desk · 4 min read

Two walkers on a gravel track in a steep mountain valley

Short answer: The Milford Track is a Great Walk in Fiordland National Park, walked one way over four days and three nights. DOC's 2026/27 Great Walk season runs from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, and both ends are reached only by boat. Explera DMC New Zealand plans the huts, boats, transfers and guides for walking groups.

This briefing is for travel agents and tour operators who sell Fiordland. Hut places on the Milford Track are limited and the walk runs in one direction only, so the dates must be fixed early and every transfer must be booked before the group sets off.

What is the Milford Track?

  • Route. The track runs one way only, from Glade Wharf at the head of Lake Te Anau to Sandfly Point in Milford Sound.
  • Time. Four days and three nights. DOC's daily distances are 5 km, 17.5 km, 13 km and 18 km, about 53.5 km in all.
  • Huts. Walkers stay at Clinton Hut, Mintaro Hut and Dumpling Hut, one night each. Camping is not allowed.
  • Highest point. Omanui/Mackinnon Pass Shelter, at 1,154 m.
  • Side trip. Sutherland Falls takes about 1.5 hours return. DOC says the falls drop 580 m in three leaps from Lake Quill.

What do groups need to book?

  • Huts. In the Great Walk season, every hut night must be booked through DOC. Without a valid booking, walkers can be charged a penalty or turned away if the hut is full.
  • Fees. For international visitors from 1 November to 30 April, DOC lists NZ$152 a night for an adult and NZ$76 for a child aged 0 to 17. Confirm fees at booking.
  • Last departure. DOC lists 28 April 2027 as the last departure of the 2026/27 season.
  • Facilities. Huts have bunks, mattresses, heating, toilets, basic cooking facilities and cold running water. Cooking utensils and showers are not provided, so groups carry their own. A DOC ranger is in residence in the Great Walk season.

How do the transfers work?

  • The start. Te Anau Downs is about 30 minutes from Te Anau by road. A boat then takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to Glade Wharf.
  • The finish. A boat takes about 20 minutes from Sandfly Point to Milford Sound.
  • No road access. There is no vehicle access to either end, so DOC says transport must be booked in advance.
  • Our plan. We book the road transfer, both boats, the return from Milford Sound and the luggage transfer to the next hotel.

Who is the Milford Track right for?

  • Fit walkers. DOC does not recommend the track for children under 10, because of exposed terrain and often adverse weather.
  • Weather. Fiordland can receive up to 9,000 mm of rain a year. DOC says the Clinton and Arthur valleys can become impassable in heavy rain, and avalanche risk can extend into December.
  • Summer only for most groups. From May to late October the track is not managed as a Great Walk and needs alpine skills and equipment. We sell it from November to April.
  • Check, Clean, Dry. DOC says didymo is present in Lake Te Anau and Milford Sound, so walkers clean their gear between waterways.
