Tunnel Beach, Dunedin: Upgraded Track for Groups

Sandstone cliffs above turquoise water at Tunnel Beach, Dunedin

Short answer: The Tunnel Beach track in Dunedin has finished a four-year upgrade, marked at a celebration on 21 October 2026. It is safer, more resilient to weather and now shares Kāi Tahu stories on new panels. Explera DMC New Zealand plans group visits around the tide, the car park hours and the steep return climb.

Tunnel Beach is about 15 minutes by car from central Dunedin. It is a short coastal walk with sandstone cliffs, a sea arch and a hand-cut tunnel down to a small beach.

What is new at Tunnel Beach?

  • The upgrade. DOC says the work over four years has made the track safer and more resilient to weather.
  • Cultural panels. Mana whenua Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou shared their knowledge and stories for new interpretation panels. Dr Megan Potiki (Kāi Tahu) wrote the cultural narrative, which reflects traditional names along the coast and the bird-hunting and food-gathering practices of her ancestors.
  • Design and planting. Aukaha design lead Aroha Novak turned the narrative into artworks, and Boffa Miskell supported their integration into the project. Native plants along the track were chosen with guidance from the late weaving expert Roka Hurihia Ngarimu Cameron.
  • Visitor numbers. DOC says the track has more than 200,000 visitors a year.

How long is the walk?

  • To the first viewpoint. 600 metres from the car park, about 10 minutes return, on a well-formed path.
  • To the tunnel and beach. 2.6 kilometres, about 1 hour return. The track is steep and narrow in places, with zigzags and steps, and the return is uphill.
  • The tunnel. It was commissioned in the 1870s by John Cargill and hand-cut through sandstone. It is dark, with a low ceiling, slippery steps and no handrail, so clients need a torch.

What should groups check before they go?

  • The tide. DOC advises a visit at low tide. The beach is unsafe at high tide and in rough seas, and it is not patrolled.
  • The car park hours. The car park is managed by Dunedin City Council and is open 8am to 9pm from September to March and 9am to 5pm from April to August. Vehicles left after closing are locked in. Confirm coach access and parking at quotation.
  • Fitness and footwear. Sturdy shoes and good fitness are needed for the full walk. Clients who prefer a short stop can turn back at the first viewpoint.
  • Wildlife. Fur seals and sea lions rest on the beach. Keep at least 20 metres away.
  • Facilities. Toilets are at the car park, but there is no drinking water and mobile coverage is unreliable.
