Halal Travel in New Zealand: Muslim Group Planning

Short answer: Halal travel in New Zealand works well with planning. Certified halal restaurants are concentrated in the main cities, so Explera DMC New Zealand books halal meals in advance, carries packed meals on remote touring days, plans prayer stops into the day and adjusts schedules for Ramadan, which is expected to begin around 8 February 2027.

Muslim travellers come to New Zealand from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, the Gulf and beyond. They usually want the same scenery as any group, with meals and timings they can rely on.

Where do groups find halal food?

Tourism New Zealand published a Halal Food Guide with the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) and the Kiwi Muslim Directory. The 2020 edition lists places region by region in three groups:

  • FIANZ-certified halal outlets.
  • Halal outlets owned by Muslims that are not certified.
  • Vegetarian places that are not halal-certified.

The guide itself asks visitors to confirm their dietary needs with each restaurant, and listings change, so we check every restaurant before we confirm it. Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch have the widest choice. In smaller towns and on long touring days we arrange packed meals or a vegetarian option agreed with the group in advance.

What should agents ask for each group?

  • The level of certification. Some groups need FIANZ-certified meat, others accept Muslim-owned outlets or vegetarian meals. Ask before we book.
  • Hotel breakfasts. We ask hotels about halal or vegetarian breakfast options and labelling.
  • Group dinners and cultural meals. A traditional hāngī or a set menu may include pork or meat that is not halal, so we arrange alternatives with the host.
  • Wine country. Wine regions are a big part of many itineraries. We swap tastings for orchards, gardens or scenic stops when a group prefers.

How do prayer times and Ramadan fit in?

  • Prayer stops. We build time and a quiet space into the day, and ask hotels and venues what they can offer. Prayer room locations at airports change, so we confirm them before travel.
  • Long summer days. With daylight saving, summer sunsets in New Zealand are late in the evening, which affects meal and prayer times.
  • Ramadan 2027. Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February 2027 and Eid al-Fitr around 9 or 10 March 2027, depending on the sighting of the moon. That falls in New Zealand's summer, so groups travelling then need early suhoor, iftar after sunset and lighter daytime touring.
